A landlord can do his own reference checking on his now prospective tenant. The tenant will need to fill out and sign a rental application giving the landlord permission to do the reference checking. The signature may need to be faxed or emailed to the current or previous landlords and employers before the references will be released. It is a good idea to work up a sheet of paper with the questions you would like the landlords and employers to answer. This sheet can be sent to the landlords and employers with the signed release from the prospective tenant. Without this signature the landlords and employers probably will not release the information because of privacy issues.
